It depends also on the units which are attacked and how deep the Cav entered the enemy troups and also the difficulty level. You should not withdraw Heavy Cav from engagement. I think the problem is not a 1212 problem. That's why in Attila, I only use melee cavalry. But enemy non cav units would have a hard time killing cav units riding away unless men during the time period of Attila, were able to run as fast as horses or faster. So having non cav units run away and not get slaughtered would be extremely unrealistic. This mechanic is perfect when it comes to non cav units because when you are on foot, turn around and run away.you were pretty much screwed in real life. I personally think the "J" key or whatever should give a bit of melee defense when used because I've noticed how suicidal it is to retreat as well.Ĭavalry moves too slow in in Attila so when cav turn around, they basically get backstabbed like you said. The problem is getting hit in the back causes a serious damage multiplier, so when your cavalry turns to retreat, the enemy they were just fighting is still fighting them. Try charging cavalry into any units other than archers and skirmishers in any other total war game. Either way, it would be a high priority target even if it's death did not wreck the army morale.Originally posted by Boromir the Blasted:Its how the total war engine works.
But I snipe the general more in Warhammer, as it is either a nasty spell caster or a monster in melee. I like the Warhammer battle AI - it's improved. Atilla also benefits from more campaign AI buffs, so the battles are more competitive before they have even begun. The battle AI seemed to lose something in ToB but that may be because, in ToB, I don't have artillery so the AI just sits there and lets you shoot it to death. The main issue for me may be some tendency to blob (crowd a lot of men into the centre) but it gives me a good fight.
The AI comes on in earnest and does a pretty good job of working its cavalry round your flanks. I find the (field) battle AI in Attila pretty decent when the player has artillery superiority. The player can always try to snipe it but that's the player's choice. When the AI has an infantry general, they hang back and join the melee late. Think we missed one?
